What I’ve Been Getting Up To During Quarantine

So with the lockdown there’s been the challenge of keeping ourselves occupied with the free time we’ve been getting. Routines have changed drastically for a lot of us with us being confined to our homes, places shut down and us having to practice social distancing.

I thought It’d be nice to share with you all what I’ve been doing whilst at home. Hopefully there’s someone who might get a few ideas from my routine something new to their routine that they dont do normally.

Home Workouts

A core part of my routine has been the home workouts I’ve been doing in my back garden, trying to get some more equipment online to keep my workouts fresh and versatile.

Working out and keeping fit and healthy consistently is hard enough for many gym goers. Throw into the mix of no access to the gym and the challenge doubles. Little to no access to gym equipment has meant those who rely heavily on studio classes, resistance or weight training like myself to keep fit have had to adapt.

A medicine ball and sandbag I bought from BlkBox and PhysioRoom (shoutout to them!) arrived last week and been loving every single exercise with them. I’ve added another element to my training and it’s great to be able to train my body in new ways.

Reading Comic-Books

I’m a big fan of the comic-book genre, mainly on the Marvel and DC side. Whether that be the films, TV shows or comics. Generally I love the thrill, the escape from reality they all give me and seeing people doing things that can only be imagined. For now at least – who knows – one can hope superheroes legitimately exist one day 😂 Slowly I’ve been expanding my comc-book and graphic novel collection, getting Flash, Batman and the crossover ones. I had a few I bought from MCM Comic Con last year and had yet to start reading so it’s been nice being able to catch up.

As of typing I’m reading DC’s Final Crisis for any comic book fans reading this post. I try and spend an hour and a bit reading or try and reach at least an issue. Sometimes I dose off though because my bed is super comfy and when I lie down I’m more prone to napping (not because I’m not intrigued by the storyline) but hey ho – automatic self-care right!

Reorganizing My Bedroom Storage

We’re in the season of spring cleaning so we might as well do a bit of a bedroom shakeup wherever needed.

On my bedroom shelf there were papers, folders, wires and plugs scattered around in their own spaces. It was organised mess but mess I wasnt entirely happy with. I bought some storage baskets so that I can have neat places to put my books, games and DVDs.

For my papers and folders I got myself 1 or 2 file trays. Whilst I’ll be the first to admit that its doesn’t look exactly Instagram-worthy it’s much more tidy and presentable than before! #DIY

Quality Time With Family

Spending time with close ones and doing things together is more important than ever. It’s a chance for bonds to become stronger as you’re all stuck and not have as many responsibilities to attend to. This is especially at a time where our mental health can be all over the place with concerns over our own physical wellbeing, income and stresses from not seeing friends and other relatives.

I’ve found myself playing card and board games with my nephews. A few weeks ago I taught my nephews how to play Monopoly and they never left the Monopoly for the whole of the afternoon. It’s cool occupying theme with something other than a tablet or smartphone. My oldest brother and I did a shopping errand. I literally for the life of me can’t remember if we ever done shopping together. It was bond-building and refreshing.

Doing More Shopping Errands

Almost every day since lockdown I’ve found myself venturing out on my bike for a 1+ hour shopping goose chase around my area. Supermarkets, off licenses, fruit & veg stalls, discount stores – occasional trips to Holland & Barrett you name it.

My mum has been sending on errands to get food cos she’s still working (luckily!) and cant be bothered with the queues stretching all the way into the middle of car parks. Honestly I don’t blame her as at times my patience and tolerance has been tested.

If you live near a Lidl’s you’d know what I mean. For those who don’t imagine the queues for a Beyonce auto sesh would look like. Because of all of this myself and my bike have literally become one. You can make a case for us being a strong couple, probably stronger than Love Island ones (no shade no tea round here!).

Cooking and Baking

With the situation right now it’s a great time for me to do some meal prep and to try out new recipes. I was seriously into baking before the lockdown and been carrying that through. My go-to baking recipes has been banana bread and cakes. The occasional protein pancake and cookies have been made as well.

One thing I really wanna make in the near future is Lemon Tofu – and bake a Shepherd’s Pie or Cottage Pie at least once. Just once!

Binging on Netflix and Disney+

Of course of course, which millennial or Gen-Z is going to pass up on the opportunity to go on a series of binges (pun intended indeed) when there’s free time on their hands.

Disney+ launch in the UK couldn’t have come at a better time. There’s so much stuff on the platform I don’t even know where to start! I’ve only rewatched a couple of Marvel films and animated shows and the new HSM series but no way in hell am I exiting lockdown having only done that.

With Netflix I’ve gravitated towards watching more films than TV shows and films that are relevant and powerful from a cultural and societal pov. 12 Years A Slave and Contagion to name a few. I personally struggle with series I know I have to do a lot of catching up with, especially if the eps are 50+ mins long. If the eps are shorter and there arent many seasons then it’ll do for me but otherwise – you probably wont be seeing me lose my shit over Peaky Blinders or Ozark anytime soon.

Gaming on my PS4

My PS4 and controller have seen less dust on it than the whole of last year. Such as the amount of times I’ve found myself playing. My main go-to game has been F1 2019 and I’ve hooked onto it, even thought the dirty driving online has sent me into small rage fits. I’ve dearly missed watches racing on a Saturday and Sunday and the game has been a useful way still doing something racing-related. Have to say though I never thought I’d found myself sweating from a gaming session before.

I’m grabbing a few more games to stave off the boredom. I’ve ordered a copy of the most recent Spiderman game and looking into getting some of the Batman Arkham games which I’ve heard are amazing! Very rarely have I played Action-Adventure games so it’d be nice to try something new. Any suggestions you guys have for games I should buy feel free to drop them below.

Getting Back To Blogging

Saving the best thing till last!

This has been the opportunity for me to overcome my writers block and get back into blogging regularly. I have literally zero excuses and it would’ve been a bit of a shame if I didnt spend quarantine turning to my blog a good enough amount of times.

You may or may not have noticed I didnt post for the entirety of March. I touched on it a bit but reasons for not posting was because I was just lacking in creative juice and motivation to write. It’s as simple as that. I felt I was in a place where other things took priority over blogging and the latter was put on the back burner a bit.

I was able to add a few blog links to my dropdown menus that I happen to forget to do. I also updated my media kit and approaching graphic designers about designing a new blog banner and maybe theme too.

What I've Been Getting Up To During Quarantine | Self-Care | Tips | Inspiration

It’s great to be back involved in a community that have been warm and supportive and great rediscovering motivation for a passion of mine. And that’s been my lockdown life.

It’s been horrible that people are dying, losing loved ones and that many are risking their lives everyday to treat the most vulnerable and beat the virus. But it’s always important to stay in a positive space mentally and physically. As much as I miss my old life (and things probably wont be the same) it’s been refreshing taking on new activities, having more freedom and paying more attention to things that are the most important: family and health.

What’s your day to day life been like during lockdown? Hope you’re all staying at home, staying safe and sane 🙂

Sounds like we’ve had similar experiences with the lockdown haha. I’ve been reading my comic books again and I’ve also spent a good amount of time cleaning and organising the house. The only difference is that I haven’t yet managed to jump on the home work out bandwagon yet… but we’ll see 😉 great post!

Thank you Piper! Dont worry about the housework Haha, everything has it’s time (by hook or crook!) That’s really cool you’re into comics as well, which ones are you reading at the moment?

      • April 20, 2020 / 10:07 am

I’m really into 80’s spider man right now so I’m currently making my way through my old collection!

Oooo you’ve gone way back haven’t you! I’ve only got novels and comics as far back as the mid 00s with Civil War

  2. April 17, 2020 / 1:27 pm

I seem to be cooking/baking an awful lot of food lately since this lockdown. I’m making Anzac biscuit this weekend, mainly because my dad wants them, but I’m not going to complain haha! Just trying to keep busy in this time though, otherwise I’d probably be going crazy. Great post – thanks for sharing!

      April 17, 2020 / 7:11 pm

No worries! Good to hear you’re keeping your Dad’s appetite on point 😂 Curious to know what an Anzac biscuit tastes like with all the baking I’ve been doing. With that being said, you got anything else in mind that you wanna bake?

      • April 17, 2020 / 8:16 pm

You need to find a recipe for them they are absolutely amazing! Other than that no, recently seen a lot of people making banana bread though so maybe I should make that as well.

      • April 27, 2020 / 1:58 pm

Organising/revamping the room deffo helped me. Gotta invest in your sanctuary 👌🏾👌🏾

  3. April 19, 2020 / 7:12 pm

Nice update. I must admit this quarantine thing has been really good for the creative juices for me as well. I’m writing more and have more ideas which is awesome. I’m glad to see you’re keeping busy and hope you keep safe.

  4. April 20, 2020 / 8:07 am

Great to see you back Johnny Boy!

It sounds like you’ve got this isolation life down to a fine art now. It’s funny how adaptable we have all become, I thought I was a creature of habit but I think I have done quite well.

I am still working so I suppose this does help and then there is the dreaded home schooling which is not fun for a high schooler. He is being sent a ridiculous amount of work a day. I was delighted when they sent an email yesterday saying that they had reviewed the homework situation and decided that an hour a subject each week would be much better for all. We will see how that plays out!

I am loving getting back to blogging and involved in the community again. During all this chaos I really felt I needed something for me that doesn’t involve work, cooking or home schooling and blogging has been just that.

Take care and enjoy your time x

Aw it’s lovely to hear what you have been getting up to! Most of them I have also been doing, although I am still working so I can only do them at limited times. When it comes to binge watching, I tend to find myself re-watching things and I started Outnumbered at the weekend!

  6. April 20, 2020 / 9:25 am

I’ve been doing a lot of the same things as you! Like, A lot! Haha, hope you’re keeping well in this time and glad you’re keeping busy, stay safe and thanks for sharing!

  7. April 20, 2020 / 9:43 am

This was a lovely read ☺️ I can see that you’re making the most of quarantine season! I love it!!! I’ve been trying to add some structure to my day besides completing home assignments for my job.

  8. April 20, 2020 / 11:30 am

Lovely post. It’s good to hear you’re keeping busy. I’m still working and so is my partner so our life hasn’t really changed much, but I’ve put on a few pounds because I keep baking cakes haha.

Yeah we’ve all been hooked and plugged into our TVs from the very first day if lockdown 😂 Hope you’re staying safe

  10. April 20, 2020 / 12:21 pm

You are living the dream during quarantine Johnny! (Like all of us). Lots of time to catch up on the to do list and reorganize for life after covid. Cheers and stay safe,

      April 20, 2020 / 3:27 pm

😂😂 I wouldnt quite say that. Still got a long ways to go in terms of maximising my time. In fact today’s been a slow day for me!

  11. April 20, 2020 / 1:36 pm

Great post! I’ve been working around the clock for over a month, have finally decided to start relaxing a bit. Best thing I’ve done during this time is get my blog back on track! Need to start doing some more things on your list. Thanks for sharing!

  12. April 20, 2020 / 1:51 pm

Amazing post. I am going to put few things on my list too! Thanks

      You’re welcome 🙂

  13. April 21, 2020 / 12:40 am

Sounds like you’re keeping busy. I’m toying with some blog redesign too! I have two blogs – one will just be a bit of tweaking, but the other I think needs a complete overhaul/rebranding. I’ve been working still though, so it’s been slow figuring out the details. I think it’s great that you have been productive and occupied without being too obsessed with a set schedule during a difficult time!

    • Johnny
      April 23, 2020 / 4:42 pm

I like how you’re taking your time with it all. I think freedom and patience is key to getting the very best results, especially when you’re doing something creative like blogging. As they say slow and steady wins the race. I hope the blog redesign goes the way you want it 🙂

  14. April 21, 2020 / 11:58 am

My boyfriend has been playing F1 2019 NON-STOP throughout lockdown. I love F1 but even I’m sick of seeing it at the moment haha! I’m doing a lot of home workouts too. My go-to game at the mo is The Last Of Us – very appropriate, considering what’s happening in the world!

    • Johnny
      April 23, 2020 / 4:50 pm

It’s so addictive! I just hate the unnecessarily dirty drivers in the online lobbies. How you finding Last Of Us? I was chatting with my cousin about The Last Of Us the other day and he was telling me good things. If the lockdown goes on long enough I’ll defo consider getting it.

Awww man thats a delightful choice! I love how Oreos can go with a lot of desserts – milkshakes, doughnuts, ice creams, cakes

  16. April 23, 2020 / 5:48 pm

I enjoyed this blog post. I envy your comic collection and I cried when the gym closed lol the queues into supermarkets are a pain. I actually like the little trolley course that my Asda has lol but I wish I had a Nintendo switch because gaming would be great right now. I’ve been playing sudoku and watching others lives on YouTube. Great post, very enjoyable to read.

Good read! Seems many of us relates to this article. We have been missing many things before and now during lockdown is the time we insert this things into our everyday routine. One of the positive thing of the quarantine is we spend more time with our family and we have time to heal ourselves and take care of ourselves too.

  18. April 24, 2020 / 3:12 pm

I’ve been working out during quarantine as well. I’m thin so I wanted to tone and build some muscle. My 18 year old daughter is working out with me. She said, “You’re either going to come out of quarantine fitter or fatter” and she’s right. We decided to come out fitter. 😁Glad to see you are keeping busy and staying safe.

  19. April 24, 2020 / 10:54 pm

Hey Johnny we have a lot on common bro! I’ve been baking and cooking a lot. Banana bread is next on my list, please share your recipe with us😁🍌🍞. I also been running errands for my mom, it’s nice to help out, even in the smallest ways. I’ve been researching Amazon for cute organizational baskets, I feel like this is the perfect time to clean up a bit lol. I’m gonna have to log in to my Disney account and rewatch Tangled. Reading your post made me very nostalgic. My father is a huge comic book guru, we or rather he have a massive collection, but unfortunately he is in Jamaica and I’m in the US, so I cannot binge read comics to pass the time. I’d love to reread our Xmen or Batman collection.

  22. April 26, 2020 / 1:16 pm

No worries Nimo! Gaming again has been such a fun and time-friendly thing to turn to. It is definitely one of the few things winning from all the chaos. What kind of games do you like playing?
