Where Am I Going Next Year? My 2020 Travel Plans

With just a day (hours at the time of posting) till we enter 2020 and the new decade its only natural we think about where we’re looking to travel to.

Usually my travel plans throughout the year are based on where my heart is set on at the time of looking for countries, and also my budget. Hence why I consciously choose not to do posts on upcoming travels. Because I never really know where I’m going.

Well for 2020 that’s about to be a bit different. Certain countries are getting the Ryanair priority treatment (probably even better). Most of these countries you see on the list were trips I originally planned to visit but for their own reason the trips fell through.

1. Luxembourg + Trien, Germany

Kicking off my 2020 travels I’ll be heading to Luxembourg in mid February. A very small country. So small that even Stockholm has a greater population than Luxembourg itself.

Since Luxembourg is quite small and close to the border of Germany, I’m also spending a day in a small, cute town called Trien in the Western part of the Deutschland, where I can be in awe of some majestic architecture.

This was a formality last year, only for some last minute cancellations. My mum and I were about to board the coach to Stansted. All of a sudden to get the text on our phone saying that our flights had been cancelled.

I booked flights a few months for my “half term” getaway. And to sweeten things public transport around the country starting is gonna be free from 2020! First country to do so. Wow wow WOW! Perfect (and lucky) time to visit.

2. Lisbon, Portugal

Everyone who has been to Portugal has had nothing but good things today to say to me about the country. Whether they’re Portuguese, tourists or who ever. I was getting nothing but recommendations from cheap prices, wine, beautiful and colourful scenery to the gorgeous weather to compliment the sights.

At the time in which I’ll be visiting I’ll be getting the opportunity to experience some of that. That will be during the spring in Lisbon as I’m riding Tram 28 to enjoyment 😉

3. Novaija + Split, Croatia

Seeing how much of a popular summer destination and how scenic their islands it is, Croatia will hopefully slot in for a perfect mid-summer vacation.

My intentions are to go for the Fresh Island festival happening in early July and in small town called Novaija. One of the things on my bucket list is to attend a music festival abroad so why not kill two birds with one stone. Also before that I’m hoping to spend a few days in Split before hitching a shuttle to Zadar itself in time for the main festival.

I reckon the trip will be a culturally entertaining experience and hopefully allow to create life-long memories, which is what travelling is mainly all about.

4. Toronto, Canada

If I could live in any country of my choice in the world then it would be Canada with little thought. Purely mainly for the good of the people living in the country and comparing it with the lack of it from most people in the UK

Canadians have a really kind heart wherever they are in the world. the small matter of saying good morning or afternoon to strangers or smiling makes a difference to your outlook of a country/place. You can punch them in the face on your worst day and they’ll still be nice about it.

I first visited 4 years ago with my brother and mum to see out 2nd cousins over in Toronto. My best memory was munching on some big BBQ wings at a place called Buffalo Wild Wings and seeing the crystal clear water strolling down Niagara Falls.

I’ve been wanting to go back ever since and been saving for this trip as far back as last summer. May 2020 finally be the year.

Now that I’m much older and more travel-savvy, I’m planning to do more sightseeing than I did on my first visit too. I’m looking forward to exploring the city more; experience the Canadian culture a lot more deeply and create more of those memories.

5. Budapest, Hungary

One of my late summer trips will see me hit up Budapest.

Much like Luxembourg this was a formality. Flights, airport transfer, accommodation, itinerary all sorted. But I had the **** misfortune of having lost my phone the day before the day I was flying out. To this very day I still have no idea how it just disappeared

I’m going at a time when it is one of the best times in the year to visit; The weather is still warm enough and at the same time it’s not as rammed with tourists as it is during peak summer months (June-July). Can’t wait to soak my body in some of their ublic thermal baths the city is best known for and indulge in the nightlife.

Plus Budapest is actually close to plenty cities in other countries. The plan is to book up to 4/5 days off work to travel to Bratislava, Brno and make a 2nd visit to Vienna as I’ve got some unfinished business over there.

Thinking about these countries is getting me more and more gassed and excited for what 2020 has in store for me. Anything can change with plans of course. In fact Nice and Lyon in France have popped up in my thoughts lately, and Switzerland too. But hopefully this is one of the situations where everything goes according to plan.

I might even start a hashtag for the year. Each one of my travels are for different reasons and will be personally satisfying. Fingers crossed my plans stay intact.

What are your plans for 2020 in terms of travels? What countries are at the top of your bucket list? Let’s talk about them below in the comments and share this post with others so they can do the same. Can’t wait to hear them all!

Makes me feel even better about my choices having your alibi! Where was your favourite out of all of them (minus Toronto of course!)?

  2. December 31, 2019 / 12:34 pm

2020 looks to be shaping up very well for you Johnny Boy!

You will love portugal, it is one of my favourite places to go, I can’t even tell you how many times I have been now.

Canada is (close to the) top of my Bucket list. I can’t wait to hear how you get on.

I want to take the opportunity to thank you for making the blogging community just a little bit more fun, you know I love your posts but I like that you ‘get me’ on a personal level. Your posts always make me smile, always make me a little jealous and you have a sense of humour that I can fully appreciate. Keep being awesome Johnny!

Well…I don’t know what to say to this Claire 😂😭 Been spending over an hour reading this and coming up with the perfect answer cos this I know has come from your good heart.

I’ll start off by thanking you for being one of my biggest fans of my blog. It’s your support, personality and presence is what keeps my desire to blog going. More importantly I’m so grateful that you recognise me as more than a blogger as that’s what I stress to people in this community. I’m a person with interests beyond travelling and blogging and it’s made my day that you’ve shown to me that you realise that.

May this friendship and our blogs of ours continue into the new year with more success 😊 God bless you!

We were almost going to visit Split on business. It was cancelled. I was disappointed. It really is difficult to get there from the US, however.

  5. December 31, 2019 / 7:02 pm

Those are surely some amazing countries to visit. I’ve never been to any of them. I probably won’t travel out of the US (since we just moved here), but we will try to travel to north western states. The USA is such a huge country to explore!

  6. December 31, 2019 / 9:50 pm

You will have a full year of seeing new places. There are beautiful places out there in the world and one of the places I have always wished to experience is the green of New Zealand.

  7. January 1, 2020 / 3:23 am

Sounds like a wonderful list! A bit sad that you’re feeling a bit negative about the UK though (I know it’s been a very difficult year). I live in New Zealand now but my heart will always be in the UK and I hope to get back for a visit this year, either for summer or Christmas. Haven’t decided where else yet except Sydney (my favourite city in the whole world) in September. Happy New Year!

  8. January 1, 2020 / 11:38 am

This looks so much fun! I love the idea of having a travel plan for 2020. We’ve booked Copenhagen for January and I’m super excited but who knows what after that! I’d love to go slightly further afield. We went to Split in August a few years ago and it’s so beautiful. Couldn’t recommend more!

  9. January 1, 2020 / 12:39 pm

Wow, sounds like an awesome year coming up! We’re trying to get to Luxembourg and maybe Croatia too this year. We were in Budapest in October and it was amazing – hope you enjoy. And such nice words you have about Canada! Toronto is my home town so that really warms my heart. Happy 2020!

    • Johnny
      January 1, 2020 / 3:10 pm

Thats cool you’re going to Luxembourg and Croatia too. Great minds think alike as they say 😂 When exactly are you planning to go to both places?

And You guys are super super friendly I dont even know if its even human 😂😂

      • January 1, 2020 / 3:48 pm

We’re thinking May/June for Luxembourg and possibly April for Croatia. And aww thanks! Very proud to be Canadian!

          January 1, 2020 / 5:26 pm

Yeah that’s a great time to come, theyre not too crowded around the spring/early summer

  10. January 1, 2020 / 12:57 pm

Wow! You have such amazing plans for the year ahead – I hope you enjoy all your travels.
Lisbon is such a beautiful city, you’ll love it there. If you have time during your visit, take the train to Sintra – you won’t be disappointed.

Noted! Is Sintra in Lisbon or outside the city? Appreciate you sharing the tip sis, what’s your travel plans for this year?

      • January 1, 2020 / 10:59 pm

Sintra is about 30 minutes away by train – I believe it is on the outskirts of the city – there’s also a tour bus which you would need to take to the castle. You’re welcome for the tip – I haven’t planned anything as of yet. I definitely want to go to Paris by March though and maybe Rome and Turkey. We shall see.

  11. January 1, 2020 / 1:14 pm

What a fantastic travel list. I am looking forward to hearing about all of your adventures.

  12. January 1, 2020 / 3:03 pm

Those are some great travel plans, you’ll love those places. Luxembourg is very pretty, Lisbon has great seafood and cobbled streets, Budapest is amazing too. Kerry Life and Loves has recently been to Budapest for Chrstmas and so has a post about it for more inspiration. Have you been to Caribana before in Toronto? It’s in July though as their carnival but I would recommend it, too! Can’t wait to read about your adventures!

  13. January 1, 2020 / 3:08 pm

Wonderful travel plans! Id love to visit Canada. My partner and I are intending to try some new destinations this year and your list is very inspiring, thank you!

  14. January 1, 2020 / 3:08 pm

Sounds like a fantastic year of traveling. I have only been to Lisbon, but I absolutely loved it. Cheers to a great 2020!

      January 1, 2020 / 5:24 pm

Thanks! I’m even booking some of the flights as I’m typing. No time or money to waste! I’ll keep you all updated 🙂

  17. January 1, 2020 / 4:18 pm

Great list! I’ve previously been to Budapest and it’s a great city, I’d also recommend the central food market for a tasty lunch!

    • Johnny
      January 1, 2020 / 5:15 pm

Thank you! I’ve heard a lot of good things about their markets when I was originally gonna go last year. Definitely got that in my itinerary, what else do you recommend?

      • January 1, 2020 / 5:22 pm

I’d recommend wandering up Andrássy Avenue, it’s one of the main shopping and eating roads and leads up to Heroes Square. Have a great time on your travels!

  18. January 1, 2020 / 4:42 pm

Thanks for sharing, Johnny! Very interesting to hear about why you’re choosing each place and I’ll be looking forward to your thoughts on them as you go. Toronto is a GREAT place to visit! A lot of times it can feel as though you’re no longer in Canada with all of the different cultures and ethnic diversity around.

  19. January 1, 2020 / 5:07 pm

What an amazing year you have planned! We went to Lisbon in August and waited 2 hours in the burning sun for tram 28, noticing that tram 12 left empty every 10 minutes from the stop next to us. When we finally boarded tram 28, tram 12 followed us for the entire route. Might be worth checking it out? Have an amazing time in all your adventures!

  21. January 1, 2020 / 6:44 pm

Wow!! What a fun list!! I’m a little jealous! I’ve been meaning to head to Toronto because I agree, canadians seem to be so kind! Happy New Year!

  22. January 8, 2020 / 10:28 pm

Wow, sounds like some great places lined up for 2020! Can’t wait to read about them!

  23. January 10, 2020 / 8:35 pm

Haha mate, you have the worst travel luck of anyone I know. I LOVE Budapest and would also love to visit Lisbon and Croatia. I think in 2020 my “big trip” will be my scuba dive master certification in Utila, Honduras, but I also hope to make it back to Europe in the fall (UK, Iceland, Turkey, Slovenia… any one or combination of those!)

Wow, I wish London would offer free public transport – it costs a fortune!! Your line up is enviable – a great mix of destinations – I’m super curious about Canada – I’d love to get there one of these days.

I hear the festivals in Croatia are rated very highly – sounds like you’re going to have a blast! 🙌

I’ll be looking forward to your blogs…so you can take us with you lol 😊
